Canada has deployed fresh troops from Edmonton to help train soldiers returning from the front line of Ukraine’s protracted counter-insurgency battle against pro-Russian forces on its eastern flank.
Thirty Edmonton-based members of 3rd Canadian Division’s 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group flew from Edmonton International Airport early Thursday as part of a six-month deployment to help improve the embattled European nation’s military capacity through training.
They will be joined by 72 of their CFB Shilo counterparts and will replace half of the 200 Canadian troops currently on the ground in western Ukraine, as part of the joint military Operation UNIFIER that began in the summer of last year and is scheduled to end in March 2017.
Brigade group commander Col. William Fletcher said training will cover everything from small unit tactics to linguistics while also “imparting some professionalism and Canadian expertise to Ukrainians.”
“There is no doubt they are brave, obviously they have been fighting an extended counter-insurgency battle, but what we are doing is bringing the professionalism, experience and skill sets that Canadians are known for across the world,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher said the Ukraine training regime had been a “successful mission so far.”
“All of the Ukrainian forces that have gone through the training … have come out better for it in the end,” he said.
“They’ve got some really hard won experience over the last few years (but) what they haven’t had is the benefit of NATO standard training, tactics, techniques, procedures and lessons learned.”
NATO’s involvement in the troubled region has escalated since the start of the year as Russia President Vladimir Putin’s sabre rattling intensifies and Moscow continues to mobilize its military.
Around 150 NATO-backed military exercises — some of which have included Canadian troops — have been planned for Eastern Europe this year and in June, 30,000 troops were deployed in Poland for the largest training exercise since the Cold War in a bid to ease nervousness in the region.
The Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are particular troubled with the prospect of the Russian army massing at their borders.
Those three nations came under the protective umbrella of NATO since joining in 2004 and under that agreement, Canada, along with other member countries, have committed to military action if they come under attack.
But Operation UNIFIER troops will not be taking part in any military exercises or training outside of Ukraine, Fletcher said.
Maj. Geoff Tyrell, being deployed in Ukraine as a member of 1 Service Battalion, said it is important that Canadian Forces continue to work with “a number of allies and partners in that part of the world” so as to “remain interoperable with them and show them we support their own interests.”
“Like any modern army we find the more we interoperate with our partners and allies the more experience we gain from it,” he said.
The sudden and silent deployment this week to Ukraine of troops from the 3rd Canadian Division’s 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group whose specialty is operating in war zones compromised by nuclear and/or chemical weapons is a terrifyingly stupid move by the Canadian Government. Why the Obama regime ordered these specialized Canadian troops into the non-NATO country of Ukraine, [without discussion in the Canadian Parliament...so far as I am aware] is not fully known, but is considered as a terrifying “war move” when viewed in the context of US supported Islamic terrorists in Syria using chemical weapons that the Obama-supported media has blacklisted the American people from knowing about.
I have been saying for some time now that the Obama regime has been exploiting the naïve and inexperienced "go along to get along" Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau i.e., bullying him to order that a "legal" report be written in haste condemning Russia's Olympic Team in the futile hope it would be banned from the Olympics...and other humiliating tests of "loyalty". Is this sending of "specialist" Canadian soldiers to Ukraine yet another "epic fail" roll of the dice/false flag effort to re-start the war in Ukraine? I guess we'll never know until it happens.
Just in case the war mongers need to be reminded of what Putin recently told the West:
“Russia will no longer play games with the United States and engage in back-room negotiations… Russia is prepared for serious agreements, but only if these agreements are conducive to collective security… All systems of global collective security now lie in ruins. There are no longer any international security guarantees at all and the party responsible for the destruction of global collective security is The United States of America…
…The builders of the New World Order have failed by having built a sand castle…Russia favors a conservative approach to introducing innovations into the social order, but is not opposed to investigating and discussing such innovations, to see if introducing any of them might be justified…
…Russia has no intention of building an empire of their own, but will not go fishing in the murky waters created by America’s ever-expanding “empire of chaos…
…Russia’s challenges lie in developing her already vast territory…Russia will not attempt to reformat the world in her own image, but neither will she allow anyone to reformat her in their image. Russia will not close herself off from the world, but anyone who tries to close her off from the world will be sure to reap a whirlwind. Neither is Russia willing to act as a savior of the world, as she has in the past…
…Russia does not wish for the chaos to spread, does not want war, and has no intention of starting one. However, today Russia sees the outbreak of global war as almost inevitable, is prepared for it, and is continuing to prepare for it. Russia does not war, nor does she fear it…
…Russia does not intend to take an active role in thwarting those who are still attempting to construct their New World Order, However, Russia will oppose their efforts if they begin to impinge on Russia’s key interests.
Russia would prefer to stand by and watch them give themselves as many lumps as their poor heads can take. But those who manage to drag Russia into this process, through disregard for her interests, will be taught the true meaning of pain…”
And just today, the leader of the Donetsk break-away Republic of Ukraine warned:
Donetsk leader Zakharchenko: "If you attack, don't complain when you have to retreat all the way to Kiev"
The head of the DNI said that Ukraine's army has been preparing to attack, and assured that there will not be a "Minsk III."
If the Ukrainian authorities decide to forget about the Minsk agreements and attack the Donbass, then they should not complain, if they end up retreating to Kiev. This was stated by the head of the Donetsk People's Republic Alexander Zakharchenko.
"The reports from our intelligence are that on the other side of the front line everything is ready for an assault. From the political point of view - the undermining of the Minsk process will be from the side of Kiev. Furthermore, a Kiev offensive will close the Minsk process," Zakharchenko writes on his website.
He believes that, in the current difficult situation in Ukraine, another turn at war may be the only way for Poroshenko to stay in power.
"That is, the whole thing goes to the fact that Poroshenko, like a cornered rat, will rush into the Donbass. Maybe he himself, or perhaps by proxy. For example, give the command to the destroyer battalions to provoke renewed conflict, and then he will blame them for it. But the result will be the same - war," said Zakharchenko.
"We do not want war, because we - as opposed to those who live in the former Ukraine - know that it is not like on TV. But if Kiev will attack us, once again, I can tell you one thing - no complaining afterwards, if you retreat to Kiev: there will not be a "Minsk III," said Alexander Zakharchenko"
So, again I repeat my warning to my fellow Canadians and again I ask the question: Why are Canada's military being sent to a war zone.... "like lambs to the slaughter?"
