Snug Cove, Bowen Island, BC

Snug Cove on Bowen Island, BC

Hi Everybody.  Today I'm trying something new.  I am going to TRY to take my readers (from all over the world) on our sailing trip in the Gulf Islands of BC.  Not being good at computer technology, this may not work all the time, but at least I've been able to upload this first video.  Here we are moored in Snug Cover on Bowen is a four hour sail or motor from our home marina in Port Moody BC.  You can take the Bowen Island Ferry every half hour or so from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.  Snug Cove is just one street up a steep hill.  It is a tourist port with lots of restaurants and shops.  It also has a good grocery store at the top of the hill...where we can get all the supplies we forgot to bring with us.

So this has always been our first stop.  Tomorrow we will head out over Georgia Strait to Silva Bay which is on Gabriola Island off Vancouver Island

The gulf islands are beautiful. As a generalization, one could say that they are one of the last remaining vestiges of democracy in Canada. People are good to each other and they run their own affairs, largely without any corporate vampires sucking them dry. Most gulf islands have banned franchises, encourage diversity, support local food growers and other local businesses. People don't lock their doors and kids 'go out' and play.

However, Bowen is under siege by the BC government and its morally bankrupt logging cartels. Up to 30% of the entire island may be logged against the will of all who live there.

Oh, can I come along? no, never mind, I have to stay to do my work and help take care of the new dog.

Hi Anonymous:

Yes, Bowen is unique with locally owned shops and produce. And you can feel the pressure on the island from tourism and corporatism. Some tourists think they are one one of the Gulf Islands and in a strict sense they are...but this island is far too close to the mainland to be a "real" gulf island.

Hi Ed(itor):

You ARE coming along on this trip...via the magic of the long as I can manage the technology. You have a new dog? What kind and how old? We have our three doggy children along for the sail and readers will be meeting them via video soon.
